Maple Sugaring Time (A first for us!)

We have 3 good size sugar maples west of our house and we decided to tap them this year to try our hand at making syrup.

We followed directions:

drilled a 7/16" hole into the south side of our tree (this felt wrong!) at a slight upward angle so sap will run out...

checked the wood shavings to make sure they looked healthy and not rotten....

laughed happily when the sap started dripping out immediately...

tapped the spile in gently with a hammer....

hung our Canada made buckets....

put the lids on to keep the critters out....

and admired our 10 minutes of effort!  We know the real time commitment comes with cooking the sap down.  More on that as we progress!

  1. That is so awesome! I can't wait to see how it all turns out. I would love to have my own homegrown maple syrup.

  3. Hi J&S...There is nothing like your own maple syrup..so different and so good!!
Did this for a long time myself and it seems there is a lot of effort that goes into it when you see that it takes so much sap for so little syrup...but the results is very rewarding, and well worth the effort ...good luck!!
I can taste a stack of buckwheat pancakes and syrup now!! lol

  4. OoHh! Jennifer and Steve, I soooo love maple sap season! They've started tapping the trees here, too. Pretty early this year, but we'll take it. We don't have any maples on our property here, mostly oaks...Yummy! I've got a great whole grain pancake recipe if you're interested. ~Vonnie
