Due to above average spring rains and the sheer amount of work it's been to establish our new garden, some of the beds got ahead of us, weed-wise. After some initial and futile pulling of weeds we decided to do some mulching instead.
First we weeded quickly along the bed margins and such...
...then we covered the weeds/soil surface with newspaper...
To keep the newspaper from blowing away we put handfuls of compost down:
Finally, we added more compost and spread it uniformly:
Now, that's our kind of "weeding"!
Hi Guys - I do this every year. I use cardboard from the dumpster of the appliance store and cut it w/ a knife. Then I use mulch hay to cover it with. WOrks great. So great that besides the planting and the cardboard/mulching days, it is about all the work I have to do in the garden all year. Except for the fun part of course which is harvest. Hope you are having fun in your new place. Looks fabulous.
ReplyDeleteHi J&S ...As Kristin said old hay or straw worked for me with news paper...weeding is the worst part of gardening...,but I just was talking to my neighbor who was on his hands and knees weeding and called it therapeutic...so go figure!!
ReplyDeleteGlad you found away around it lol!!
Looks like a great solution!
