Signs of spring!

A hike at Highbanks Metro Park on a sunny afternoon reminded us that the warm season will soon be here!

White oak acorns are germinating:


Ohio Buckeyes - Aesculus glabra, Horsechestnut Family (Hippocastanaceae) are leafing out:


And, the early spring ephemeral wildflowers are gearing up for quite a display. 

Bloodroot - Sanguinaria canadensis, Poppy Family (Papaveraceae)





Spring Beauty - Claytonia virginica, Purslane Family (Portulacaceae)

    You are just a little ahead of us. I have been poking around Douglas Woods all week...finding trout lily leaves peaking through the leaves, toothworts ready to bloom, hepatica just starting to throw up some flower stalks. The salamanders are laying eggs in the wetlands and wood frogs getting into full swing. Yah for spring! The woods teems with life just waiting and I marvel at it all.
