When the Weeds Get Ahead of You...

Due to above average spring rains and the sheer amount of work it's been to establish our new garden, some of the beds got ahead of us, weed-wise. After some initial and futile pulling of weeds we decided to do some mulching instead.

First we weeded quickly along the bed margins and such...

...then we covered the weeds/soil surface with newspaper...

To keep the newspaper from blowing away we put handfuls of compost down:

Finally, we added more compost and spread it uniformly:

Now, that's our kind of "weeding"!

  1. Hi Guys - I do this every year. I use cardboard from the dumpster of the appliance store and cut it w/ a knife. Then I use mulch hay to cover it with. WOrks great. So great that besides the planting and the cardboard/mulching days, it is about all the work I have to do in the garden all year. Except for the fun part of course which is harvest. Hope you are having fun in your new place. Looks fabulous.

  2. Hi J&S ...As Kristin said old hay or straw worked for me with news paper...weeding is the worst part of gardening...,but I just was talking to my neighbor who was on his hands and knees weeding and called it go figure!!
Glad you found away around it lol!!
